Description

Spruce, Larch and Douglas fir Group (
Piceoxylon
)
Miocene, Chalk Lake Formation
“The Bruneau Wood Pile”
Bruneau, Idaho
This outstanding short limb section has outstanding character and nicely preserved wood anatomy.  It is assigned to the form genus Piceoxylon which includes woods in
the
genus
Picea
(spruce),
Larix
(larch) and
Pseudotsuga
(douglas fir).  This form genus is used for conifers with small to medium sized resin canals and as you can see in our close-up photomicrograph this specimen has numerous resin canals in the range of 50 to 60 microns.   It is a specimen that will be immediately recognized as petrified wood by even the most novice of observers.  Note the nice wood grain character along the exterior.  The specimen is cut and polished on one end to highlight the excellent preservation.
It is also unique in that it is permineralized by the mineral francolite, a member of the apatite group.  This contrasts with the more typical petrified wood that is permineralized by the silica mineral, chalcedony.
The site was described in the
on-line magazine
Geoscience
article entitled

by Viney, Mustoe, Dillhoff and Link.  Dillhoff also published an addition to this article, also in
Geoscience
entitled
Supplementary Materials: Atlas of Wood types from the Bruneau Woodpile, Idaho
.   This specimen measures
It measures  5/8″ in diameter on the polished face and it is 2 1/2″ in length.
